Antique Art Deco Sterling Silver & Stunningly Rare Bohemia Dragon’s Breath Cabochon Chain Necklace
Antique Art Deco Sterling Silver & Stunningly Rare Bohemia Dragon’s Breath Cabochon Chain Necklace
Early 1900-1920 Art Deco sterling silver decorative chain necklace with six absolutely gorgeous examples of glass Dragon’s Breath bezel set cabochon stones. Peach colored stones with beautiful flashes of a brilliant ultra violet blue, indicative of these rare early 19th century stones from Bohemia. (Now Czech Republic) In excellent vintage condition, gently cleaned with original patina.
The name Dragon’s Breath comes from the ultra violet blue (or sometimes green) flashes within the transparent glass which resemble clouds of smoke in their fluid appearance. Although there are no artisan notes nor historical records of the exact methods or process done to create this effect, it was often achieved by adding melted metals to the molten glass when making the stones. It is widely thought that pure gold was added to achieve the most highly sought after and rarer blue colors such as the ones represented in this necklace.
