19th Century Extra Long Sterling Silver Flattened Double Curb Muff Guard Chain with Threaded Screw Swivel Dog Clip
19th Century Extra Long Sterling Silver Flattened Double Curb Muff Guard Chain with Threaded Screw Swivel Dog Clip
Circa 1820, this glorious, antique muff, or guard chain, complete with its original screw dog clip clasp, (consistent with the Georgian era) is a total of 59 incredible inches in length, weighing in at a whopping 41.55 grams of flattened, double curb link, goodness. Can be doubled, tripled, or worn as a single strand with your favorite charm off of the dog clip. Tightly woven links like these are very sturdy and give good weight to the piece. As is typical with this type of 200+ year old chain, slight kinks can form when stored, but are easily removed with a subtle bouncing or shaking motion, helping them to relax and go back to being smooth.
In both the Georgian (1714-1837) and Victorian (1837-1901) eras, guard, or muff chains, were used to carry pocket watches, vinaigrettes, keys, fobs, hand warmers, muffs, or other items needed within reach. A note about the threaded screw swivel dog clip clasp: Much different and more unique than the later, Victorian era dog clip clasps, this style has a top collar that screws up to open the hinged clip. Flip the hook end back into the opening area, screw the collar back down the shaft and it will secure and lock in place. Over tightening will release it once again. Fully functional, in excellent, vintage condition with original oxidized patina and minor, slight wearing on some of the links, due to age, wear and love.
Please note: antique box and pisces charm, not included.
