A nod to Belgium’s faith in science, technology and the hopeful power of atomic energy for peaceful purposes after World War II, the original Atomium structure, was built in Brussels, Belgium for the 1958 World’s Fair (Expo 58). Named as a combination of "atom" and "aluminum", it represents an iron atom magnified 165 billion times, symbolizing scientific progress and the atomic age, and its original spherical coverings were made of aluminum. Its futuristic design mirrored the optimism of the era.
