Traditionally “Sweetheart Brooches” were given to women when their partners or spouses, who were soldiers, went off to war, shipped out to sea, or traveled by train, as a token, or romantic keepsake, to honor their loved one while away. Most popular from the late 1880’s until about 1918, they traditionally mimicked the shape and size of military medals yet depicted softer imagery, incorporating hearts, vines, flowers, anchors and birds, (most often everyday, ordinary things).
