Long before my husband, Mr. K, reached the ripe old age of 21 he sat on a stool at the end of the bar and enjoyed a cocktail (or two!). This wasn't just any old bar and it wasn't just any old stool, for that matter. The bar was Tosca and the stool, Carol Doda's, whom he had the pleasure of chatting with on occasion when she would take a break from her shift at the infamous Condor Club, down on Broadway.
When he and I met in 2000, he took me to the bar on one of our first dates, which became the beginning of a beautiful "friendship" with an incredibly magical place. Over the years we brought family and friends, celebrated, grieved, discussed various trips and made plans for our future, all while sitting in our little slice of heaven, an island, as he calls it, at the end of the bar. Always warm, inviting and familiar we have gotten to know the staff, owners and regulars while witnessing so many classic San Francisco moments with local legends and heroes.
Probably my most favorite story is one of Mr. K's best memories about being at the Tosca one night during the filming of The Right Stuff, long before we ever met. Both Chuck Yeager and Sam Shepard (Swoon!) were at the bar talking over drinks. Mr. Yeager's truck was parked out front and both he and Mr. Shepard rolled up their sleeves, went outside, popped the hood and checked for a possible oil leak. Mr. Shepard crawled under the truck with a flashlight to investigate the problem while Mr. Yeager fiddled under the hood. Two legends, one truck and a fabulous bar.
Last night was the Tosca's grand finale before going through a change of ownership and a (hopefully) slight makeover. Although it won't ever be the same, our hope is at least we will still feel the magic that we have always felt and witnessed all while sipping our drinks at the end of the bar.
Goodbye for now Tosca, we love you!
