While many of you head out this weekend to join your loved ones via car, boat, bus, plane or train, in preparation for your holiday, I'll be staying put. Although our slightly bigger than a cracker box sized apartment is small, it's super cozy. Once I get our tree up, decorate our "hearth" (translation: vintage steel barrister case tops) with some of my favorite family heirloom decorations and blast some fine tunes from our extensive retro and modern Christmas music collection, I'll look forward to spending an intimate holiday with my husband and our three furry felines.
To kick it off, we'll be spending this weekend celebrating our fair city in all of her holiday finery. First stop? A dinner of souffle's and sparkling at the loveliest little restaurant we know, Cafe Jacqueline. This is one of the true gems of North Beach and where we had our first official date, 12 years ago. Nothing can compare to the warm and welcoming service, the perfect pacing and the delicious savory and sweet souffle's. We've been there so many times, it feels like being in our Grandmother's kitchens and we never leave without popping into the pantry to bid Jacqueline an apropos, "Merci, Madame, c'est magnifique!"
Next up? Gazing at the Union Square holiday tree, a little downtown shopping and a quick pass by at the Macy's SPCA sponsored windows where YOU, certainly not us, (uh hum, we have our hands full over here.) can adopt your own furry little friend. Then, to the infamous John's Grill for a post shopping cocktail respite in their adorable little back corner bar. We have made this an annual tradition and our favorite bartender always remembers us as if we had "just been in last weekend."
For Sunday, it looks like we'll be preparing a traditional roast turkey Mole dinner for friends, served with cilantro, pomegranate and cotija rice stuffed poblano peppers paired with Mr. K's Mayan Sidecar (see recipe below) to drink and homemade espresso chocolate pot de creme with fleur de sel for dessert.
With whom or what will you begin celebrating with this weekend? I hope you savor each and every moment! Stay tuned for my follow-up about next weekend's festivities, more sneak peaks at local favorites to come!
