As a jeweler, I adore precious and beautiful things. In my 700 square foot apartment though, one thing is for sure; these things have to play double duty. Having a purpose while still retaining beauty and embodying a clever design sense that includes both form and function, makes any object that more useful and significant.
A recent birthday gift from my sister, this exquisite, antique jewelers’ loupe is a perfect example. Lovely to look at, smooth to the touch, a clever disguise for a beautiful yet functional tool and, in itself, with that brass bail at the top, a piece of jewelry. Does it seem frivolous to have such a decorative tool? Perhaps. Does it work equally as well as a more mundane, classic jewelers’ loupe? Why, yes! So why not strive for beauty and comfort in the everyday tools of life? I use the term “tool” loosely. When taking a closer look at all the day to day objects I come across, while relishing the way that the loveliest of things fit into my life, I find inspiration. The sublime beauty of form and function can be found anywhere, be it a lamp, a chair, a motorcycle, a piece of jewelry or the ever so humble tool, the loupe.
What's your favorite form meets function item? I'd love to know!
